Balloon Festival

September 28, 2011

Abilene, though a small town, always surprises me with the fun little things that pop up to do, you just have to be paying attention. I’ve lived here for 6 years and never once have been to, or seen anything on the “Annual” Balloon Festival. Well, this year was the 17th year and I happened to see the little signs for it so I thought I would go.

I planned on attending before I even decided to build my mantel, and was a little bummed when I thought I would have to go alone. Lucky for me, Friday night some friends wanted to go to dinner so I hopped out of my painting/building clothes and back into what I wore to work that day. I brought my camera just in case anyone wanted to go see the hot air balloons, but I also wore my new heels – I was only half-way prepared.

To my surprise, everyone wanted to go, especially since it was just down the road from one of their houses. We parked as close as we could and walked about a mile and a half across a field full of potholes, not fun when you’re wearing heels and it’s dark. Oops!

After I managed to make it across without breaking an ankle, we walked around and looked at all of the balloons. They were so colorful and so fun. They would all light up together when the announcer counted down, or start “twinkling.” I snapped some photos {seen below} and wanted to come back during the daytime, but the mantel took over the rest of the weekend. The festival was really a festival with vendors, food and rides, I was shocked!

Enjoy the photos!

What fun, unexpected things have you found in your hometown?

So pretty 🙂 I live in Grapevine, so we have a ton of festivals here…but my favorite thing we do is the Halloween wine trail. So fun to see everyone walking around in their costumes!

Hey there! I’m so glad you found me and left a message! I’ve actually been across your blog as well because I was getting started designing Christmas cards last Christmas and a friend told me to check out the way you do things! It helped alot plus inspired me– you’re so creative! I’m glad to be reminded of you again because I’m seeing that I could look around forever at all of your great tutorials, you have a wonderful blog! I’ll be back 🙂 Nice to “meet” you too!

I love the balloon fest! My mom’s company used to have a balloon every year…Rob & I even got to take a ride across the city when we were dating once. It would have been a lot more fun had the heat/altitude combination not made me so sick…ha!
