The Laundry Room

November 16, 2011

Husband and I have been dreaming about this laundry room for over a year now… Sometime in that year, the plans changed and evolved into something even better. This laundry room would sell the house for me {if I was buying}, so I hope that it does for someone else when we get ready to sell. I can’t begin to tell you how wonderful it is to not only have a laundry room, but to have a laundry room with the washer and dryer right next to each other like they were meant to be.

The first 15 months of our marriage, we didn’t have a washer and dryer. I tried the laundromat until it ruined an entire load of whites due to something someone ahead of me decided to dry? So for about 15 months, I spent all day every Saturday doing laundry at my in-laws. While that was fun and good, the time for a laundry room of my own had come and gone. When we bought this house, the laundry room was definitely an after-thought. A long narrow {4ft x 11ft} closet that had hookups, green shag carpet, and an attic access. It was a tight fit, and for a year + I squeezed my way around the dryer to get to the washer. Exibit A:

We were blessed with a generous housewarming gift, a new set of front loading washer and dryer. I was giddy all the way until I realized the above layout was all I had to work with. But I made due and I loved having a laundry room of my own – no matter how small and cramped it felt – plus my new washer and dryer sang to me, just an added bonus.

Well, over the last 3 months, we’ve been slowly adding the finishing touches to our new laundry room, and I have the pictures to prove it! First, the main inspiration photo I used, once I saw that turned leg support for the counter top, I was sold.

{found here}

Knowing we had some pretty limiting size restrictions, I came up with this sketch and it remained tacked on the wall {with dimensions} for quick reference.

We weren’t going to be able to put the turned leg on the outside edges for space reasons, but I think it turned out spectacularly just the same! And now for what you all REALLY came here for, the photos!

Don’t you love it?

You may have noticed my Rapido in some of the photos, I’d like to add that I still love it and use it regularly, it’s a huge help with all that hard surface! I still need to mount the bracket on the wall, but it’s happy in its new home!

The ironing board will be getting a new cover at some point, that’s just what I had on hand. We hung it using a simple double coat hook, basically like this, found at Target. I made sure to hit a stud for extra strength and it works perfect to be completely hidden when the ironing board is up!

And for the sources, because I know you’re all wondering:

  • Cabinets – Ikea
  • Ceiling planks – Lowe’s {more on that here}
  • Shelf & Hanging rod/Hardware – Lowe’s {more on that here}
  • Woven Basket {where I store all of our dinner napkins} – Michael’s
  • Granite color – Black Pearl
  • Turned leg – Lowe’s {it’s actually one of these that we lopped off the top and cut down to size}
  • Lighting – halogen recessed lights
  • Tile for backsplash – c/o American Olean {left over from our kitchen and bathroom}
  • Flooring – Bamboo found on clearance at Lowe’s
  • Artwork – c/o New Era to the trade I had on hand & a DIY {see this post for more info}
  • Wall paint color – Benjamin Moore HC-1 Castleton mist
  • Trim paint color – Benjamin Moore OC-17 White Dove, “pearl finish”

We did all the work ourselves except some electrical and obviously the granite. Our total bill came in around $2500, everything included! Not too shabby! In case you were wondering, we put all 4 legs of each appliance on 2″-self stick “super sliders” like these so we can pull them out without worrying about scratching the floors.

What I still have left to do is find some sort of runner rug to put down in front of the washer and dryer, and then a step stool that will fold up nicely behind the door… I have to pull a chair in to get to the upper shelves of the cabinets 🙂

I love my laundry room, it brings me so much joy… which I know may sound odd, but something that you have to do is so much better when it’s in a pretty space! And the countertop is absolutely amazing, I don’t know that I’ll ever be able to have a laundry room without one again!

I’m linking up here, here, here, here, here, here, here, & here!

    Great room and reveal. One thing I am definetly using from your post is putting those slider things under the legs of our washer and dryer. What a great idea! We use them at my work and another lady and I have moved a VERY large conference table all by ourselves with them. Didn’t even think about doing that at home.
